Tonelli’s - the end of an era
September 22, 2008Tonelli’s Pizza closed on 8/31/08. I am getting hungry just looking at this photo. I can taste it and smell it. It seems only fitting that our last pizza from there was perfect. Perfect means, you are trying to eat a corner before you leave the parking lot. Those bits of sausage you see there, they were just the right amount of done on that last day. Look at the cheese ( be right back- I am getting a napkin to wipe my mouth ) it’s just right, browned but not overdone. The history behind Tonelli’s is long for my family. Growing up, we followed the church rule of no meat on Friday’s. That would mean either a delightful white fish smothered in tartar sauce or PIZZA from Tonelli’s. We only had cheese pizza - not the scrumptious and delicious one below. Since I am the only person left living in vicinity of Tonelli’s when anyone came to visit, we always had to share a Tonelli’s pizza.
I loved having my own children experience a real Chicago pizza. Living in California didn’t expose them to what good pizza was. To them it was a doughy dinner from Pizza Hut. We had to drive 20 minutes into town to get the pizza because we lived too far from town for delivery. By the time we got home the pizza was cold and wasn’t that great. We got by but when we moved back to Chicago in 1998, they finally understood what GREAT pizza was all about. I am going to miss this little part of food history.
